Stray

Oh, here comes another stray

(and I, with my bleeding heart)

Put out the food and draw them in

Give them what they need to heal

then watch them as they walk away

back to the home that sent them here

Maybe a touch too quick to judge

This one might be the one that stays

The one to finally give back

at least a part of what they’ve taken

No, that’s just a fantasy

born of the aforementioned heart

This one will be just like the rest

As always, this is just a phase

A stepping stone to greater things

A place to come to find your way

Inevitably they’ll carry on

and I’ll be waiting for the next

To make sure the heart keeps bleeding

and the arms still open wide

Another stray to feed and care for

another claw and tooth to bite
